To encounter the enjoyment and satisfaction that one derives through success in his life, a definitive goal setting is essential. Sadly, many people fail at this vital point. The goals that we set for ourselves must be definitive and specific and not vague. Our minds must always hold that image of accomplishing a goal in a vivid manner. In order to fulfill our goals, the image of the goal which we hold in our mind needs to be sharpened regularly with time. A vigorous and organized purposefulness towards a definitive goal will focus all the powers of a person into a strong motivation towards its fulfillment. In a nutshell, if someone wants to know how to achieve a goal, the first and foremost step is to have a vivid picture of the goal planted in the person’s mind.
Now to add to the definitiveness of a goal, hard work and enthusiasm are most necessary. A goal will remain unachieved it one doesn’t strain every nerve, so as to achieve it. A person must leave no stone unturned in order to set and fulfill his individual goals for a work. The work may be as ephemeral and minute as completing a small homework or as colossal as becoming a football player. A goal without persistence makes as much sense as a car without wheels. As Thomas Carlyle said, there is a perennial nobleness and even sacredness in work. Shying away from hard work is a sign of weakness.
The next step in “how to achieve a goal” is motivation. Yes, toiling hard under the scorching heat of the sun just for the sake of it is doltish. One must have a driving force towards that work. There is no point in setting individual goals for a work if something doesn’t motivate a person. Motivation may arise from good or from bad experiences. Both these experiences are equally necessary. For an eight year old, completing his homework is his motivation as he gets his favorite snacks once he does that. For a grown up, a small compliment from a friend or a constructive criticism from the same helps. Motivation which arises from bad experiences shouldn’t be overlooked as they instill the importance of working harder the next time.
In the long run, we encounter the most vital quality one must possess as he is in the process of fulfilling his dreams and the quality is confidence. As many successful people say, there is no point in trying to do something if one isn’t confident.
The only feasible way that one can actually build deep and sustainable confidence is by testing and practicing the use of principles of tough-minded living on real life situations. One can sit down in the library and read plenty of books about self confidence but they won’t do any good in solving real life problems. For example, a swimmer can simply refuse to jump into the water by saying that he is confident about his swimming but sadly, that doesn’t help. Sitting idle and contemplating at our goals doesn’t fulfill them. So the only way to develop real confidence is by practice. One must spend a large number of hours perfecting his craft and this way alone he can be ensured of attaining real confidence.
Thus, we can conclude that there are many things that need to be done in order to achieve our goals. In the path of setting our goals to achieving mastery in it, we will succeed.
